I came in with very low expectations and came out a very satisfied fan.
It definitely isn’t G1, but if they couldn’t do G1, this movie was the next best thing. And can I say, the movie was HILARIOUS.
I still don’t like the designs and the camera work needed to zoom out more during the action sequences, but overall, it was a fun and thoroughly enjoyable summer blockbuster…in every way possible.
If anything, I am just happy that they did Optimus Prime justice character-wise. The design was hit and miss, but damn did they do a good job on his character development. Peter Cullen ROCKS!
Lastly…this movie IS a 2 1/2 hour commercial. I want a Camaro…and I want the freakin’ toys.
You guys need to watch this movie!!!

I was wondering how the new “Transformers” movie was going down with you guys. I don’t have any current plans on seeing it; I’ll wait for it to come out on DVD. Then again, I can’t guarantee that I’ll see it at that future time. I never was a Transformers fan. I saw the cartoon and it just didn’t take hold with me. But I would never keep a Transformers fan from seeing it if they want. :bengali:
And for you Transformers fans out there, don’t forget the latest Toyfare issue that’s dedicated to the Transformers.
I cant watch it now. I got this thing called surgery and it kind of prevents me from going to the movies at least for another week. However im glad Transformers is doing well at the box office because it sends out a message that 80’s properties are hot so that may mean movies coming out like G.I. Joe a new MOTU and ThunderCats. I just dont want to see 80’s properties like My Little Pony, Cabbage Patch or Rainbow Brite hit the big screen because those will truly be a MISS.
i agree that this wasn’t strictly the 80’s g1 version, but still bay did a really good job in translating the feel & excitment of transformers for us “grown up” kids. & it was a great was of putting the transformers in an almost modern real life situation, since it was live-action.
Catspat - to tell you the truth, I liked Transformers as a kid, but I never really got into it that much either. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie! They did an awesome job on it, I thought. In fact, it has become one of my very favorite movies now. And Manny’s right. I want a Camaro, too! 8)
I recently saw the Transformers series on TV some months back, and I didn’t feel one way or the other about them. Optimus Prime was being Optimus Prime and StarScreamer was being StarScreamer. To be honest, I did like the Transformer shaped like a gold lion (once again, my cat-lover persona comes to the fore), but he was the only one. Or am I thinking of a character from another cartoon?:?
I may or may not see the movie when it comes out on DVD. And I may or may not see it at the cineplex. I’m simply undecided right now. :?
Catspat, I also didn’t like the Transformers as a kid and even when I recently saw the show again, I didn’t like it. I didn’t even like the toys!
Yesterday I went to see it… Wow! Those special effects!!! I believe this is the first time I went to a cgi movie and didn’t say “That’s clearly computer generated”. I saw Star Wars III, I liked it a lot, but… When I saw the actors in those worlds, they seemed so “not being there”, they were always brighter than the surroundings, etc.
Maybe I’ll buy a Bumble Bee if the toy looks good and it’s cheap!
Well I liked transformers a lot as a kid but that was until I got into Thundercats (that faithful night when I watched exodus). I watched the movie and well to be honest, it was a let down. Here are a few observations;
-First the designs for the revamped transformers look very busy. In the case of Megatron, it takes a few moments to figure out his face. Starscream robot form looks a like a Transformer knockoff from the 80’s.
-If you are going to have fast pace action, your models better have a simple clean design. Otherwise it will look like a blur moving at a fast pace (which happened a lot throughout the film). IMO, a good example of fast movement with a simple design is the Citroen C4 TV ad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6X7PAdSfHO8
-It felt like an ad for Ebay or chevy.
-The robots were not the story, it was the boy and Megan Fox (not necessarily a bad thing). I would have loved to see Ms. Fox giving Bumblebee a car wash, but thats just me. Seriously, the robots hardly said anything at all. Starscream only had one line in the entire movie, etc.
-I know I’m going to get pounded with this comment, but there were a number of jokes that well it just wasn’t funny to some people.
Anyways, don’t mean to sound so negative, but I hope some see my point of view for what it is, just a different point of view.
Bingo.. my feeling about the movie exactly Lynx117.
The CGI was top notch, without a doubt… but they forgot to budget for a decent script. I know, I know.. it’s not a real deep concept, but give me a break.. aside from the first 5 minutes, the next 45-60 minutes is wasted on trying to build up a really weak character.
The effects while cool, moved too fast or where too flashy to really enjoy. It reminded me of an episode of “The Simpsons” where they went to Japan. “Giant Battling Seizure Causing Robots” anyone?
And then, wow.. surprise, surprise… a secret government agency steps out of the shadows. Ok.. I’ll bite, if only for the moment. But then, lets make one of the lead agents for said agency a total moron. Yeah.. yet another wasted chance for something interesting (Think Cadmus from Justice League Unlimited), all in the name of the predictable movie “formula”.
And yes.. at the end of 2 hours and 20 minutes … I kept having to fight an overwhelming urge to buy a Chevy or GMC vehicle.
Not a bad movie.. but not great either. Unfortunately, this will end up being sequeled to death… and I trust a decent plot, much like batteries, will not be included.
Brilliant minds think alike!!! I just hope that if there is a 'Cats movie, it will not take the Transformers formula. I don’t mind watching a long movie as long as the plot is good. I know, lets have Peter Jackson make the MOTU and 'Cats, make both of those movies 4 hours each and also both movies nominated for Best Film!! Where is Peter Jackson when you need him?
I liked the movie. It’s better than Armageddon and certainly better than Pearl Harbor.
There were down sides; Far too much attention on the human side of things and not enough on the bots. Megatron looked less like Megatron and more a mutant Bionicle.
However, despite that, hearing Peter Cullen as Prime made it worthwhile. It’s just a shame Frank Welker didn’t reprise Megatron, though Hugo Weaving did an admirable job portraying the decepticon leader. The action sequences were spectacular and stylish. ILM worked magic again (and will probably be nominated for Best Visual Effects at next years Oscars) What little characterisation of the bots there was, was reasonably accurate. The plot was a slight overcomplication of a very simple premise (a movies gotta have some filler), but it served its purpose.
Like most people I did leave the cinema with a desire to buy the toys.
I look forward to the sequels. I just hope they give the bots some more screen time and work out a way to put Soundwave in there.
Those are some cute comics Lynx, where did you find them? I would like to see some more. I love to draw chibi (super deformed funny anime) and I love that kind of humorus art.
